Romania currently produces about 7 pct green energy
At present, Romania produces about 7 percent green energy and will have to reach 24 percent by 2012, Minister of Environment and Forestry Laszlo Borbely said on Tuesday at the end of the conference entitled The Green Economy: The New Challenge of the Contemporary World.
Romania ranks 21st or 22nd by production of green energy among the EU member states, with a level compared to that produced by the former Socialist states, Borbely said.
'Romania currently produces nearly 7 percent green energy and it will have to get 24 percent by 2012. Romania's position is in the second half of the countries, close to the former Socialist states, because we joined the European Union only in 2007. But we do not occupy the last position. I believe we rank 21st or 22nd,' the minister stressed.
The United Nations Development Program Romania, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, staged on Tuesday a roundtable tackling the UN conference on sustainable development (Rio + 20). The debate focused on the contribution Romania might bring to the 2012 Rio+20 Summit and its topics, such as the green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication and the institutional framework for sustainable development as well.
Public institutions, diplomatic missions, NGOs, representatives of academic and business milieus attended the event.
